Not only has trumpeter Terence Blanchard released an impressive catalogue of jazz albums, but he’s put together a rich mix of movie soundtracks. This latest on the summit meeting of various civil rights leaders, is a mix of nostalgia, history and relaxing nightclub tones. Pianist Benny Green is featured on a series of vignets that highlight his relaxed and bluesy stride on pieces such as “Rumble, Young Man, Rumble”, “Tammy” and “Brother, What Is Going On?’. Most of the other pieces feature Jasper Randall doing an impressive read of Sam Cooke singing material ranging from the pop “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons”, gentle “You Send Me” a choral “Chain Gang” and a gospel’d social message “A Change Is Gonna Come”. There are a couple of ringers to create a Kennedy Era atmosphere, such as an impersonation of Jackie Wilson on “Lonely Teardrops” and a bawdy “Howl For Me Daddy” with guitarist Keb Mo and vocalist Tarriona Ball. A bit of a patchwork, with each song making you wish there was an entire album of similar material.
