Franco Ambrosetti brings his trumpet and flugelhorn to lead a classy sounding collection of all stars in this wonderfully lyrical album of mostly jazz standards. The team of John Scofield/g, Renee Rosnes-Uri Caine/p, Scott Colley/b and Jack DeJohnette/dr is first rate, with the added bonus of having the world famous drummer deliver a golden intro on piano to Horace Silver’s elegiac “Peace”. The tune has the leader enter stage right on flugelhorn in starry shining style, with Scofield’s patented guitar solo just adding to the rich flavor. The two work well on Ambrosetti’s Latin flavored “Silli In The Sky” while his “Dreams of a Butterfly” teaming himself with Caine and DeJohnette with evocative arias. Ambrosetti sighs in recline with Caine on a flavorful “Body and Soul” and gently gasps with Rosnes and Colley for the serenade “I’m Gonna Laugh You Out of My Life”. Each song feels like a piece from an Italian opera, filled with rich emotion and bel canto voicing. Bravo!
