Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano shows here wares in a pair of different environs.
On trumpet, Allemano teams with Brode West/as, Andrew Downing/b and Nick Fraser/dr for a collection of tunes dedicated to vegetables. “Beans” has a one short, one long leg of a clippetty clop for a lopsided alto solo, while the askance horns get angular with dots and dashes trying to outrace each other on “Avocado”. Allemano cleans out her mouthpiece by sucking out the saliva on the tentative “Leafy Greens” and the team gurgles and gasps on “Champignons.” Gimme a lamb chop!
Playing percussion and trumpet, Allemano teams with Mike Smith on “live processing” and “effects” on a collection of intuitive conversations. Wind chimes sound out dark drones and gasps on “Enchantments” with something resembling drinking from a straw is evoked on “Decanted”. Echoes, good bad and ugly cries howl on “The Nesting” and multi-tracked muted brass stirs on “Cremini Cycle”. The Summoning” resembles what you hear if you put your ear to a shell, and then Allemano dares to deliver a melody on the elegiac “Oracle of “Chanterelee”. More noodles than a soup kitchen.
