John  Lang: Now Ear This

Bassist John Lang brings together two bands for a swinging session produced by legendary bassist John Patitucci. The trimmed down team of Lang with Matthew Sheens/p, Avi Rothbard/g and Mike Campenni have some rich post bop sounds, with Rothbard sounding like John Scofield on the hip “The Town of Tiny Rooms” and Lang laying down a hice pulse on “Scharborough Cha.” Many of the tunes have either a feel akin to vintage Stevie Wonder, as on the sizzling “Sis Boom Bah” and “Well Done”, or a rockish jazz sensibility  akin Steely Dan as on “the funky “Without Doubt” and soulful “Triolation” with the team of Gary Fisher/p, Jay Azzolina/g, John Romagnoli/dr and a hip horn section of Dan Blankenship/tp, Ken Gioffre/as, Tim Armacost/ts and Matthew MacDonald/tb. Lots of soul, rock and percolating jazz that is accessible and begging for a lyricist like Donald Fagen.
