Defying the draconian social distancing of the day, pianist Jesus Fuentes brought a box of wipes and masks in order to create a safe environment at the Smith Memorial Hall’s Room with his team of Matthew Storie/ts, Andrew Binder/b, and Maxwell Osawa/dr for a four tuned ep of post modern musings. Fuentes’ touch is in the vintage tradition of Tommy Flanagan and Cedar Walton, displayed well on the trio read of the sizzling samba “So Tinha De Ser Com Voce” that has the pianist in full fisted swing. In the quartet atmosphere, the direction goes to mid period Coltrane, with Store in a muscular mood on “Passion Dance” and building up after taking the baton from Binder’s opening lead in on “Va de Nuez”. Fuentes’ own “Tren Azul” shows rich lyricism between the sax and piano, with Osawa and Binder digging a rich pulse. Timeless tones.
