Gary Bartz, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad: JID 006

“JID” stands for “Jazz is Dead”. Go figure, coming form sax legend Gary Bartz. In teaming with DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammed and bassist/keyboardist/producer Aldriane Younge, you wonder if he’s just trying to glean some new ideas from the younger generation, tapping into the hip hop beat or just plain tired. His solos aren’t that long, but his tone is still gorgeous and rhythmic. On soprano, he noodles over the electric bass line of “The Message” and slides over the chant of “Visions of Love”. CTI-flavored soul helps give a jazz feel to Bartz’s alto sax on “Black and Brown” while the team does an overdriving heavy pulse on the Impulse!-ish melody of “Distant Mode”. Bartz taps into his inner Maceo Parker on the Famous Flamer “Soulsea” and is pretty on “Day By Day”. Tyner-less times.
