CLASSIC TO THE LAST NOTE…Larry Coryell: Larry Coryell’s Last Swing With Ireland

Guitar Legend Larry Coryell made his name as one of the very first “jazz rock” guitarists back in the 60s, but as the years and his own life progressed, he and his music became more mainstream and classy. This studio recording, his last before his untimely death in 2017, has him in both acoustic and electric formats with his team of Kevin Brady/dr and Dave Redmond/b, and like his autobiography of the same time mentioned, he  sounds at peace.

Acoustically, he uses the nylon strings to melodic perfection on a rich solo read of “In A Sentimental Mood” while in a band format he sways with luxury to the samba’d “Morning Of The Carnival”. Plugged in, he bops with delight as he stretches out on “Relaxing At The Camarillo” and his hip to Brady’s pulse on “Someday My Prince Will Come”. Brady and Redmond dig deep for the rocking “The Last Peavy” and Coryell paints blue with broad strokes on the fun “396”. Everything you like about Coryell is well demonstrated here, and if you missed him while he was alive, here’s a chance to introduce yourself to his rich catalogue.
