Vocalist Bill Kwan delivers soulful interpretations of the Sade songbook, putting his own fingerprint on the signatures. Mixing small jazz combos with strings, Kwan is able to make each song his own. His rich voice can wisp on the delicate “The Moon and the Sky” with support by Alex Sipiagin’s trumpet, or rises to the big sound of the 90ish soul of “No Ordinary Love” with Kevin Hays’ Rhodes and a rich string quartet. He tangos with Ludovic Beier’s bandoneon on the bohemian “King of Sorrow” and takes a stroll down noir alley on the desultory “Haunt Me” with Sipiagin in muted mood. Some CTI soul works on the hip “Love Is Stronger Than Pride” and steps into high society on “The Big Unknown”. A nice fresh coat of paint.
