Afro Yaqui Music Collective: Maroon Futures

Mixing moods, messages and musical styles, the Afro Yaqui Music Collective is a 13 member band with vocalists Gizelxanath Rodriguez and Charlotte Hill O’Neal. The music is a smorgasbord, with a mix of staccato horns and rap hip hop on the disco-ish “Ya Habibi” to a mixing of Spike Jones and free bop with some baritone sax wailing by Benjamin Barson on “We Refuse to be Abuesed and Abused”. Kinetic pulses, and earthy nasal vocals make up the traffic fam of “ La Cigarra” and pretty Middle Easter strings, rap and R&B dig deep for “Sister Soul”. A dash of vintage remixed Alice Coltrane teams with echoey moods and harp with chanting voice on the surreal “Insurrealista”. Lots of flavors, with some especially hot enough to make you break out into a sweat!
