The post bop team of Eric Jacobson/tp, Eric Schoor/ts, Paul Silbergleit/g, Mark Davis/p, Jeff Hamann an drummer Dave Bayles create an album of nine rich originals, mixing vintage Blue Note tones with modern directions.
Classic hard bop is delivered on the muscular modal “One Way” as Bayles sizzles along with Davis’ Tyneresque tones on “One Way” while Davis gets dark on the rich harmonics of “Echoes of the Past”. Schoor’s tenor is warm on the beautiful ballad “Unspoken” and flies over the gallop of “Vivid Dreams”. Jacobson is bright and shiney on the percolating “Heading Home” and the horns lock like stallions on the upbeat “LaRae” and Messenger-ish “Blues For George”. A blue plate special that stays with you.
