Three generations are brought together with this band featuring elder saxman Dave Liebman along with pianist Billy Test, bassist Evan Gregor and Ian Froman on drums as they delve into moods of later period John Coltrane.
Liebman is featured on soprano on a hefty amount of material here, and he gets frisky on an outside take of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” while gasping through “My Foolish Heart.” Froman hits hard and taps into his inner Elvin Jones on the assertive and aggressive title piece, and lopes like a gazelle during Coltrane’s classic “Village Blues”. Liebman’s tenor swirls through an intro to “You and the Night and the Music” before Test creates an avalanche of energy, while “Yesterdays” has Gregor dig deep into magma.” Music of deep Impulse!
