Mainstream guitar joys are picked out by leader Dan Wilson along with his core team of Christian Sands/p-key, Marco Panascia/b, Jeff “Tain” Watts and special guests Joy Brown/b and Christian McBride/b (on a duet and a fun take of “Born To Lose”). The team hits the ground running with a deeply dug bass groove on the wild ride bopper of “The Rhythm Section” with Wilson’s and Panascia’s ’s fingers faster than the eyes. Wilson shows a nice easy sleek sound on the post bopper “Bird of Beauty” and lays out a hip relentless line on “Who Shot John”. Sands is upbeat on the boppy “The Reconstruction” and the whole team is bluesy on the title piece. A pair of duets have Wilson in a tender mood with the visceral Brown on “Cry Me A River” while a deep pocket with McBride brings up a rich “James”. Brown is earnest on the soulful duet of “After The Rain” while the Motown classic “Inner City Blues” has her soulfully strutting with Sands’ humming organ. Wilson shows a rich range of tones, all done in a most tasteful fashion. Whichever band shows up in concert, I’ll be there.
