****RINGER OF THE WEEK****BASS IN FRONT…Leon Lee Dorsey: Thank You, Mr. Mabern

Leon Lee Dorsey gives a tribute to the recently departed pianist, Harold Mabern, who was one of the carriers of the hard bop torch, and died right after this session. This trio album brings Dorsey and Mabern together with vintage bop drummer Mike Clark for a classy collection of jazz standards. Taste and style ooze from every track, with a gospel groover on “Rakin’ and Scrapin” ( a revisit from an early Mabern session, with lots of soul  emanating from Mabern on a hip take of “Watermelon Man” and Clark relentless on the back beat. Clark snaps like pea pods on the 6/8 read of “Summertime” and grooves with the sticks flying on a scintillating “Softly As In A Morning Sunrise.” Dorsey is in rich tone on his melodic read of “Misty” and glides like Astaire on “Simone” with the team cooking like Bobby Flay on “Moment’s Notice”. Timeless treasures
