Pianist Yoko Miwa uses her post bopping team of bassist Will Slater and drummer Scott Goulding to interpret her clever originals and take on some bop classics. She shows her dramatic finger skills on a splashy read of Richie Havens’ “Freedom” and takes on with Brad Barrett’s bowed bass an agonizing read of “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” with a gospel solo intro to Billy Preston’s title pieces. She does a nice dance with Slater on “The Lonely Hours” and is elegant on “Inside A Dream”. Goulding adds extra uumph to the gliding “Largo Desolato” and the team shows it’s bop chops on the bouncy take of Duke Jordan’s “No Problem” and a playful read of Thelonious Monk’s “Think Of One”. Miwa shows originality in thought and delivery. Rich reads.
