Known as the “Dean of Canadian Jazz”, clarinetist Phil Nimmons is given a musical tribute by grandson Sean on piano/Rhodes and a team of Kevin Turcotte/tp-fh, Tara Davisdson/as-ss-cl, Mike Murley/ts, William Carn/tb, Perry White/bs-bcl, Jon Maharaj/b and Ethan Ardelli/dr on a collection of Nimmons originals. Grandson Sean contributes a dark and rumbling “Rista’s Vista” while most of his charts give a hint of Neal Heft, as on the easy Basie swing of “Nufscicisum” and “Harbours”, which features Turcotte’s warm horn. Davidson’s soprano is impressionistic on “Holly” and his tenor is relaxed on the calm “Sands of Time”. Maharaj is up front on the synthy “Liese” and is given space on the noirish “Night Crawler”. Sublime swing.
