The trio of pianist Helio Alves, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca return for a rich mix of Brazilian interpretations of originals, classics and a couple surprises. The overall mood is lyrical and cheerful, with a ready mix of interplay, soloing and grooves. Of course, there are some sambas presented, and “Maucha na Praia” features Alves driving home the theme, while the lovely walze “Aninha” is a warm reflective thought. Matta leads into a clever “Black Orpheus Trilogy”, with some clever re-working of tunes such as “Samba de Orfeu” and “Manha de Carnaval”. The team also gets into a Charles Mingus mood, taking the famous bassist’s “Boogie Stop Shuffle” and letting Da Fonseca give it a South American kick. Likewise, Matta’s bass is dark on “Asa Branca-Baiao” and moody on “Baden”. The Brazilian waters run deep here.
