Russ Lossing: Meta Morphism

Post bop-toned Russ Lossing leads a rich quartet with Loren Stillman/as-ss, John Hebert/b and Michael Sarin/dr through a collection of thoughtful originals. Lossing shows his allegiance to late period Blue Note material in his tune dedicated to Andrew Hill on the introspective and inquisitive “Blind Horizon” with Stillman’s soprano lurking on the sunrise. With Stillman on alsto sax, the team shows adventurous dimensions on “Three Treasures” and the elliptically pretty “Sojourn” with Stillman’s alto warm and bright. Sarin gets kinetic with the saxist on “Pileatus” and intricate on the dedication to fellow stick man Paul Motian on the title tune, snapping with Hebert on the quirky “June Jig”. Lossing himself gives bluesy sighs on “Canto 24” and is rich and illuminating on “Mai”. While some of the songs do stretch out for over 10 minutes, they never lose cohesion and each solo makes perfect sense like a thread in a tapestry. Rich rewards abound here.
