It’s fitting and proper that pianist Marc Copland should do a tribute the recently departed guitar legend John Abercrombie, as he toured with him for a number of years, thus knowing the mindset of the musical genius. This album has Copland lyrically interpreting Abercrombie’s compositions, and it is a richly constructed mix of pastels “Pieces like “Timeless” are clear and reflective nocturnes, with rich spaces giving time for breathing on the somber Isla” and the elliptical “Love Letter”. He’s in full stride on the reflective “Sunday School” and meditative on “Remember Hymn” with a rich dash of blow on the noir shadows of “Avenue”. As with many eulogies, the mood is tender and respectful, giving the longtime friend and partner a well thought final adieu.
