Manteca: The Twelfth Of Never

A wide range of colors moods and beats are produced by this eclectic octet, which includes the woodwinds of Colleen Allen, the percussion of Art Avalos, drummer Charlie Cooley, mark Ferguson/s trombones and vibes, bass work from Will Jarvis, trumpeer Jason Logue, guitarist Nick Tateishi, keyboardist Doug Wilde and percussionist Matt Zimbel. The eight songs have no stretched out, self indulgent solos-instead you get concise messages by Logue over the shuffling pulse of “Meanwhile Tomorrow”, thick sax work over the funky beat of “Lowdown” and some deep reads on the gospel-ish “Five Alive”. Warm brass glistens on the salsa’d “Never Twelve” and hints of a 50s B-movie, complete with rich flute and bass clarinet cast a long shadow on “Smoke and Mirrors”. These guys must be seen to be believed. Will there be enough room on stage for all of the instruments?!?
