Jorge Roeder: El Suelo Mio

Double bassist Jorge Roeder goes solo for a mix of interpretations of originals and covers on this accessible and lyrical session. The only time he emphasizes his bowing prowess is on a Bach-ish rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman”, the rest of the time strumming, picking and tenderly bending the strings with his fingers. He has a rich texture on the melodious “Chabuca Linena” and is not afraid of using space as a sound as on “Solo Juntos. His range is remarkable as he strums through “Ting-Thing” and he goes into lower worlds on the bopping “Bounce”. You even hear nuances never before discovered during his read of the standard “I’ll Remember April” while he twirls out a flamenco session as he builds up tension on “Patrona”. Depts are plunged into.
