LA tenor saxist Jeff Ellwood brings together some of the finest locals in pianist Alan Pasqua, bassist Darek Oles and drummer Joe LaBarbera for a mix of originals and standards. Ellwood’s tone is strong, full and dark, sighing on the elliptical “”Provence” and relaxed for the sleek “U-R”. The modal “King Henry” include Bob Shepard loaning a second tenor, while Pasqua delvers some Tyneresque touches. The deft LaBarbera brings in a nimble intro to the bopping “The Honeymoon” and Oles teams up with Ellwood for a rich and warm “For Roger”. I haven’t seen this guy in any local clubs, but this album makes me want to once this draconian lockdown ends.
