Ethan Helm uses his compositions as a base for improvising as he plays alto sax and flute along with a team Owen Broder/as-bs, Addison Frei/p, Ethan O’Reilly/b and Matt Honor/dr deliver a mix of rich originals provided. Just about everyone gets a chance to solo and give an intro to a tune, such as O’Reilly giving a rich baton to the rhythm team to “Alice In Promiseland” and Frei sauntering in lyrically before the saxes enter on “Where Is Your Wealth?”. Wondrous flutes fill the room on “American Whispers: Streams-An Old Church” with moods changing from reflective while the post bopping “American Whispers: Pines” strutting with confidence.
