Andrew Gutauskas: Look Out!

Andrew Gutauskas is a double threat on baritone and soprano saxes on this bopping session with a core of bassist Josh Paris and drummer Chris Smith in a trio setting, sometimes going quartet with trombonists Robert Edwards or Willie Applewhite. The piano or guitar chordal support isn’t missed at all, as Gutauska’s bari fills the room on the fun toe tapers like the title piece and the lovely “Once Upon A Time”. He goes bel canto with Edwards as the rhythm team saunters on the sensuous “The Kingpin” and swings easy with Applewhite for “Willie’s Willin’”. On soprano sax, Gutsauskas goes a bit more outside on the freebopper “For The Throne” and gets the team in a funky mood for the backbeating “Whistle Blower”. Paris does a yeoman’s job of keeping the music cogent and Smith sizzles on the hi hat and tom toms for some nice rivulets. A real nice walk in the reeds.
