Al Muirhead Quintet: Live From Frankie’s & The Yardbird

A pair of gigs only 4 days apart capture Al Muirhead on the trumpet are rarely played bass trumpet with tenor saxist Kelly Jefferson and bassist Neil Swainson while rotating Reg Schwager-Jim Head/g and Jesse Cahill-Ted Warren at the respective gigs through a swinging set of bop standards. The horns gloriously lock on the classic “Tenor Madness” with Jefferson’s big tone highlight the situation, while “Emily” floats with gentility. Muirhead glistens like shiny chrome on Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring” and on the ebullient “I Don’t Stand A Ghost Of a Chance With You.” A take of “Four Brothers” is a toe tapping delight, and the horns go bel canto on “Mona Lisa”. A second take of “Tenor Madness” has Muirhead showing that replacing partners does nothing to the saddle. Vintage sounds and beats.
