Patrick Cornelius: Acadia-The Way of the Cairns

Rich toned alto saxist Patrick Cornelius leads a quartet of Michael Janisch/b, Krisjan Randalu/p and Paul Wiltgen/dr through a collection of thoughtful post bop originals. Cornelius and company show their bop bonafides on pieces like the title tune, with Janisch getting some nice soloing spotlighted, as well as on the sleek “Personal Beehives”. Randalu broods well with Janisch’s bowed bass on the heavy hearted “Seawall Sunrise”, with his piano sounding prepared on the nimble “Ten Years Later”. As with most altoists, Cornelius shines best on the nocturnes, glistening on the warm “Valse Hesitante” but also showing muscle flexing on the driving “Darkest Night”  Forward thinking traditions.
