Luke Sellick & Andrew Renfroe: Small Vacation

If guitar giant Russell Malone gives a guitarist an endorsement, as he does on this album by fellow six stringer Andrew Renfrow and bassist Luke Sellick, then this collection of nine duets deserves your attention.

The album wins you over with its subtle conversations, as the two change lead roles like professional Shakespearean actors. Sellick strums over the folksy travelogue of “Hills of Mexico” and delivers a joyful melody that sways on Neil Young’s “Tell Me Why”. Renfroe gets rural on the blues “Someday Baby” and gritty on Skip James’ “Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues”. Rich panoramic textures are painted on “Witchita Lineman” and the slow, casual and relaxed “Wondrous Love”. The two interact with elegance on “God Only Knows” and show the joys of serving each other in the friendly “Wildflowers”. Rich verses.
