Andrew Renfroe: Dark Grey

On this ep, guitarist Andrew Renfroe gives acoustic and electric reflections ranging from blues to post bop with the spark flying team of alto saxist Braxton Cook, pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi, bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Curtis Nowasad. Most interesting is the wide ranging selection of material, with the team giving a hard hitting and swinging read of Olivier Messiaen’s “L’Ascension” to a rich and acoustic finger picker on “Jimmie Rodgers”. Nowasad is crisp and assertive with the team urgent on the plugged in title track with some bright alto work by Cook, with the traditional East African “Chemirocha” in a scintillating cadence. The team travels the dusty rural road on Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Someday Baby”, with everything being tied together with the musicians digging deep into jazz’s roots either home or abroad.
