Sweet-toned vocalist Aubrey Wilson creates some clever reads of standards on this album with a supporting cast of Chris Bruder/p-Wurl, Tom Altobelli/b, Sean Bruce Parker/dr and guests Luis Deniz/as and Scott Tapley/g. Wilson wisps through a modern and smoothly soulful take of “Nature Boy” and slows down the Fats Waller title track to wear it’s essentially a different song, as Altobellis’ electric bass joins with Tapley’s guitar for an ethereal and dreamy milieu. Deniz’s alto is found on the two easy swingers, “I Will Wait For You” and “Lullaby of Leaves” while Bruder taps into his inner Vince Guaraldi on the funky back beat version of Waller’s “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter”. There’s an aria read of “When Sunny Gets Blue” and a soundtrackish “When I Look In Your Eyes” while Wilson gives a breathy intro to the elastic “Stolen Moments”. Lots of liberties taken, and most work well.
