John Daversa Quintet: Cuarantena-With Family At Home

Trumpeter and composer John Daversa takes time from his big band to tap into the roots of Latin life, the family with compatriots Dafnis Prieto/dr, Gonzalo Rubalcaba/p, Sammy Figueroa/perc and Carlo De Rosa/b. The fun part of this album is that each gent delivers a little talk about his personal family, sometimes in Spanish (like Prieto) or in English such as Daversa giving cherished memories. The music itself is absolutely gorgeous, mixing Daversa’s muted Miles horn with rich and dark themes as on”#45”, “#22” and the richly reflective “Opus 1”. Rubalcaba goes romantic with Daversa’s open horn on “Un Bolero Para Lola” and Figueroa percolates in a similar environment during “Oma”. The team is relaxed for ”Soldado Distinguido” and impressionistic with Rubalcaba giving a Debussy-esque atmosphere on “Cancion de Cuna para Hara”. Eternal values of melody and family come together like a Sunday meal with everyone sitting around a banquet. Eat!
