In commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Little Rock Central High Crisis, which was the integration of the southern public schools, pianist Christopher Parker teams up with vocalist Kelley Hurt and a supporting cast of Bill Huntington/b, Brian Blade/dr, Bobby LaVell/ts, Barck Franklin/tp-fh and Chad Fowler/as to create a richly musical and thoughtful six part suite. Hurt supplies historical narration on “By The Numbers” and the penetrating “Roll Call” with Parker’s fingers guiding the direction and Franklin’s horn supplying thoughtful support. The balance between passion and patronizing is done well here, with Blade supplying a loose mood with the horns getting free in declaration on “Crisis” and the horns giving a glorious reprieve on “To Be A Kid”. The issues are addressed in a clever way, making the music, like the topic, stand the test of time.
