Ben Wendel mixes his tenor sax playing in with some piano, Wurlitzer and EFX as he joins together both Shai Maestro and Gerald Clayton on piano and Fender Rhodes, bassist Joe Sanders, drummer Nate Woods and vocalist Michael Mayo on some rich textured originals. Mayo’s voice ranges from celestial “aahs” on the ethereal “Less” to improvised scatting on the galloping post bop “Drawn Away” and kinetic “Burning”. Wendel’s tenor mixes warmth with Coltrane passion on the mix of Gregorian chant and Brian Eno for “Traveler” and creates orange heat with Mayo on the driving “High Heart”. The songs come across like moods for a soundtrack, making the listener create visual soundscapes. A new kind of mood music.
