Drummer Richard Baratta swings the silver screen with a crisp team consisting of Vincent Herring/as-ss-fl, Paul Bollenback/g, Michael Goetz/b, Paul Rossman/perc and guest vocalist Carrol Scott. Baratta knows how to set a pace and a mood, creating clever arrangements, such as a sizzling samba’d “Luck Be A Lady” and doing a shuffling groove to “Everybody’s Talking”. The team sears on a modal waltz of “If I Only Had A Brain” with Herring searing on the alto, while his flute teams with Bollenback’s wacka wooking guitar on a funky read of The Beatles’ “Come Together” and wraps his soprano around Scott’s rich voice on an embracing “Season’s Of Love”. Barrata drives like Mario Andretti, upbeat on “Let The River Run”, popping the clutch on “The Sound Of Music” and galloping on a salsa’d take of “Chopsticks”. Where’s the popcorn?
