Noah Haidu: Doctone A

Pianist Noah Naudu gives a long overdue tribute to the too-early-departed pianist Kenny Kirkland (1955-1998) on this collection of interpretations of his compositions. He’s teamed with a core trio of Billy Hart/dr and Todd Coolman/b along with visitations by Steve Wilson/as-ss, Gary Thomas/ts, Jon Irabagon/ts-ss and Dan Sadownick/perc. In the three member format, Haidu gives rich solo intros to an elegiac “Doctor Of Tone”, a classy “Dienda” and an elegant “The Tonality of Atonement” which also feature Hart in a wonderfully communicative mood. Wilson’s alto is urgent on the driving “Chambers of Tain” with a soprano that floats after Haidu’s dreamy intro to “Steepian Faith”. The team with Irabagon’s tenor goes post bop on a sophisticated “Blasphemh” and Thomas’ tenor gives a dark Coltrane mood for “Mr. JC”. Impressive impressions
