Luba Mason: Triangle

Relaxed toned vocalist Luba Mason creates intimate moods in this “live in studio” session with the deft support of vibist Joe Locke, bassist james Genus and percussionist Samuel Torres. She shows her wide range not necessarily in terms of dynamics but in actual moods, although she can produce strong emotions as on the revealing “Toxicity” and lurking “Haled’s Song About Love’. She’s echoey along with Locke on the Spanish read of “Unforgettable”, and kinetic on the boppy take of “In Walked Bud” as she follows the vibists intro. She’s clear and street savvy for “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” and cleverly understated on a Latinized take of The Beatles’ “Ticket To Ride”. Mason is also known as an actress in various environs and she shows here that she knows how to sing a role as well as play one.
