Junk Magic: Compass Confusion

Famed keyboardist Craig Taborn taps into his inner King Crimson on this fusiony album with Mat Maneri on viola, drummer David King, bassist Erik Fratzke and Chris Speed playing sax and clarinet. Taborn’s keyboards and synth work are reminiscent of mid period Brian Eno while the use of Maneri echoes Starless and Bible Black period David Cross. Rhythms consisting of typewriter type tapping and dark echoes dominate “Dream and Guess”, spacey edges and echoes float on “Compass Confusion/Little Love Gods” and ominous mists akin to a scene from Hound of the Baskervilles hover on “The Science of Why Devils Smell Like Sulfur”. A melding of post bop sounds and Another Green World and heavy drums bring an ominous “Laser Beaming Hearts” and synthy tingles make you look over your shoulder on “Sunsets Forever”. Tubular Bells, Eno and Larks Tongues in Aspic poured into an Erwenmeyer flask.
