Celebrating Charlie Parker’s 100th birthday, bassist Fumi Tomita features tenor saxist David Detweiler along with pianist Art Hirahara and drummer Jimmy MacBride for a collection of originals inspired by the bebop master. Tomita’s touch is nimble, going into a cool direction with Detweiler’s tenor on “Oceanology” with the team sitting pretty on “Waltz of the Mon”. Tomita does some nimble work with MacBride on the dark and hip “Bird Dreams” and displays a jogger’s rich pulse on “Capital Circle”. MacBride gives a snappy intro to the double timed’ Bird’s Yard” and leads the boogaloo on “Like Sigmund”. A treat for ornithologists.
