Bassist Eric Revis captures the mood, sounds and emotion of Charles Mingus on this album that mixes tradition, free-bop and messages with his team of Kris Davis/p, Bill McHenry/ts, Darius Jones/as and alternating drummers Chad Taylor or Justin Faulkner. Included in the album are three parts of the title track, all with Revis’ bass teamed with eerie moods and effects, almost as a “Selah” between assert themes such as the noir “Earl & The Three-Fifths Compromise” with squawking reeds or the loose hard bopper “Vimen” with rich piano work by Davis. Piano strings and bass create a pulse for the funky and quirky “Baby Renfro” and Jones gets blue on the lurking “When I Become Nothing”. Revis directs like a traffic cop, keeping the cars going in the right direction and just avoiding head on collisions. A fun white-knuckler.
