TWO TRIOS…Matt Moran Trio: Return Trip, Adam Glaser Trio: Wide Awake

Keyboards in threesomes.

Gary Versace plays a deep and harmoniously sophisticated Hammond B3 along with vibist Matt Moran and drummer Tom Rainey on this Hound of Baskervilles fogged collection of tunes. The vibes and Leslies are both mellow on “Ripples” and the deftly brushed “Peace and Integration” coaxed along by Rainey, with the chords getting splashy as he jabs with Moran on “Spring”. The three get bluesy on a gospel’d “Effish” and the vibrato goes bel canto on an aria of “Lush”. A rich mix of hums and chimes.

Pianist Adam Glaser joins together with bassist Pete Coco and drummer Chris Smith on a collection of the leader’s compositions and interpretations. Of the latter, Glaser gets bluesy with coco on a hep read of Schumann’s 3rd Symphony during “Day Trip to Cologne” and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring has Smith and Coco  giving a Brazilian pulse on the clever “Sacrificial Rhumba”. Glaser’s chords get dark on the waltzing “True To You” and is graceful as he wafts on “Lullaby For A Little Boy” with rich chrods in display on “November”. Classy and glassy.
