Norwegian vocalist Solveig Slettahjell sounds like a late period Billie Holiday (or mid period Madeleine Peyroux) as she teams with Andreas Ulvo/p, Trygve Waldemar Fiske/b and Pal Hausken/dr on a mix of originals, Tin Pan Alley cats and some clever modern pieces. She’s quite the earthy thing on the rapid paced “Now Or Never”, while the team clickety clacks during “On The Street Where You Live”. She wearily trudges through “How Deep Is The Ocean” and casts a long dark shadow with a full moon on “’Round Midnight”. She’s rich, misty, bold and regretful over Ulvo’s fisted chords on “Since I Fell For You” and sizzles over Hausken’s high hat on “You’re Driving Me Crazy”. Challenge this lady anything to sing with class and style, and this Norwegian would.
