Drummer, leader and composer Raphael Pannier leads his team of Miguel Zenon/as, Aaron Goldberg/p and Francois Moutin/b through a rich mix of passionate originals and interpretations. Alto saxist Zenon agonizes over Moutin’s bass on Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” and is blue over Pannier’s snapping sticks on “Lullaby”,”. Pannier shows how to change dynamics as on the echoey title track or the brooding “Capricho De Raphael” that has Goldberg’s variations in a romantic mood. Moutin and Pannier race to the finish line as they dance along Ravel’s “Forlane” and the team is crisp on a nimble read of Wayne Shorter’s “ESP”. Impressive directions.
