Nicole Zuraitis: All Wandering Hearts

I’ve gotta admit that I’m a sucker for a jazz singer who writes her own stuff. I mean, do we really need one more “My Funny Valentine”? Nicole Zuraitis has a nice use of the pen, sometimes feeling like a reflective Joni Mitchell, other times akin to the sardonic wit of Randy Newman on this album teamed with Idan Morim/g, Dan Pugach/dr, Alex Busby Smith/b, Carmen Staaf/key and a mix of guests. She teams well with vocal compatriots Thana Alexa and Elise Testone on a warm and embracing “Make It Flood” and the three rock it out on Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U”. Her “Gold” is earnest and pure, while she is cozy and homespun in the intimate setting of sitting by the fire as she sings and plays a relaxed piano on “What A Wonderful World” as well as on her own tender “Lullabye”. Fresh voices of a troubadour spirit.
