Bassist Michael Feinberg creates an interesting theme for his latest album in that each song is a dedication to the home town of a famous cultural figure. The flexible post-bop team of Dave Liebman/ss, Noah Preminger/ts, Gary Versace/p and Ian Froman/dr give musical biographies and tributes to John Coltrane on “Hamlet”, with Preminger in a richly blue mood while Froman and Feinberg dig a deep blue on the bopping nod to Elvin Jones on “Pontiac”. Feinberg delivers a rich intro to the dark “East St. Louis” with Preminger and Versace saluting Miles Davis while fellow bassist Charles Mingus gets some flashy fingered respect on “Nogalis”. Liebman mourns on Jackie Robinson’s “Cairo” and is free and assertive as he jabs like a middleweight on Muhammed Ali’s “Louisville”. Musically, geographically and culturally, this one’s a winner.
