Max Bessesen: Trouble

Alto saxist Max Bessesen displays a post modern tone as he leads  team of Ron Miles on cornet and piccolo trumpet, drummer Nathan Friedman, pianist Eric Krouse and bassist Ethan Philon on these ten originals. He displays his tone on a solo take of “Trials” as well as on “Nungam” over Friedman’s pattern, leading into a snappy ESP-ish “Bakkam”. Much of the material gives hints of Miles Davis’ 60s band with a dash of In A Silent Way on “Mayhem” with some soulful keys and Miles’s pulsating horn. A muted Miles sighs with Bessesen on the dark “Trouble” and the two float to Philion’s bass on “Be My Love”. Bessesen works well with  Miles’ smiles.
