David Bach plays a tone of keyboard varieties as he leads a mix and match band that includes David Marq/sax, Leonard Stevens/g, Lorenzo Sands/b, Mark Prince/dr, Ekendra Das/perc and a host of guests. The album feels like it could be an instrumental Steely Dan outing, with some funky beats and Rob Zinn’s horn snapping over the keys on “Fierce Heart” or the team getting into a deep groove with some nice guitar work by Stevens over Ekendra Das’ percussion on “Mandalay”. A modernization of Eric Satie gives a clever “Gymnopedie” along with Marq’s alto sax, while Sands gives a soulful pulse on “Strike The Note.” Most fun of all is a take of Queen’s “We Are The Champions” with some synthy breeze and jazzy drumming. This guy’s got some bright ideas, and they shine well.
