Sabertooth Swing: Songs of Future  Past

The New Orleans team of Dan Ruch/voc-tp, Alex Canales/sax-cl, Chris Butcher/tb, Romain Beauxis/g, Spike Perkins/b and Robert Montgomery/dr mix traditional tones of the Crescent City with a dash of the modern. Ruch is warm in both voice and horn on the swinging take of “Frankie and Johnny” with the added tenor of Seth Ballin. Butcher slides like Ricky Henderson over the strumming srings on “Blue Skies” and guest Ryan Hanseler brings his Teddy Wilson’d fingers in to stride right on “How Deep Is The Ocean”. Canales’s clarinet is laconic and wondrously lazy on WC Handy’s “Atlanta Blues”.  Couple of modern tunes fit right in, with Ruch delivering a raconteur’d “Chocolate Jesus” and avuncular read of Phish’s “Lawn Boy”. A delicious gumbo.
