Misha Mullov-Abbado: Dream Circus

Bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado leads a post-bop team of James Davison/tp-fh, Matthew Herd/as, Sam Rapley/ts, Liam Cunachie/p-org and Scott Chapman/dr through a mix of contemplative and loose fitting originals. Mullov-Abbado’s bass his a palpable tone, rich during “Seven Colours” under Davison’s horn, and trudging as the horns squeeze out notes and make reed buzz sounds on the somber “The Bear”. Mullov-Abbado gives some of the pieces a Charles Mingusy feel, mixing freedom and tradition, with the horns swaying and crying on “Blue Deer” and getting frisky and brash, sounding like the circus is in town on “Little Astronaut”. Herd’s alto is shrill on the ballad “Stillness” and eleaic on the static “Equinox” as the horns puff and huff on the muscular “The Infamous Grouse”. Lots of grays in the mix of colors.
