A mix of piano and vibes by Miki Yamanaka has her leading a team with the arid alto sax of Anthony Orji, bassist Orlando Le Fleming and drummer Jochen Rueckert. The center of the album is a ive part “Human Dust Suite” that includes peppy piano to open things up, a military drum leading to shadows of vibes, some busy interplay with a bass leading the way to “Feet Go Bad First” and some lovely impressionistic piano on “Party’s Over”. Orji’s alto gets a bit pinchy on the post bopping “March” and softens up to Rueckert’s brushes on “First Day of Spring’. The leader shows great flexibility, going from dark stride in a saloon to snappy swing on “Berkshire Blues” and ricocheting with Ruekert on “After The Night”. Personal piano.
