Leader Julian Shore plays piano and some synthesizer with some of the best of todays younger artists on this latest album. It’s hard to go wrong with multi-reedist Dayna Stephens and guitarist Ben Monder in the front line, with the core team of bassist Edward Perez and drummer Colin Stranahan keeping flexible on the classy post bop works. Guest Caroline Davis brings her alto sax in to add to the soft front line for the airy “Preludio” and tenor saxist Oded Tzur bookends the album with extra reed to Shore’s classical touch on “Where We Started”. Stephens creates a cool breeze to Shore’s flowing touch on “Winds, Currents” and the two dig into the post bopper “Tunnels, Speed”. The team gets a bit abstract and electrical with Stephens on the EWI on the pastoral “O Vos Omnes” and the band is soft and delicae on “Marshes, Amphibians”. Piano in pastels.
