It seems that with each subsequent album, tenor saxist JD Allen is focusing on turning his horn into a musical fog machine a la Ben Webster. Fewer notes and more mist reaches its height here with Allen in a trio format with Ian Kenselaar on bass and drummer Nic Cacioppo. Speaking of tones, Kenselaar goes loose a la Jimmy Garrison with Cacioppo evoking pulses of Elvin Jones on a flowing and sandied “You’re My Thrill” and gritty “Elegua (The Trickster)”. His sound fills the room on the traipsing ballad “The G Thing” and preaches over Kenselaar’s throbbing pulse on “Die Dreaming”, going bel canto on the spacious “Toys”. Palpable sounds.
