Hermine Deurloo with Steve Gadd: Riverbeast

Dutch chromatic harmonica player Hermine Deurloo teams up with legendary drummer Steve Gadd and the flexible supporting cast of Kevin Hays on keyboards and bassist-guitarist Tony Scheer. The album sounds like a vintage Steely Dan session, with a mix of jazz, soul and rock working superbly. Alain Clark adds some voice to the sing song soulful “If We Can’t Trust Each Other” and the New Orleans gospel’d “Walk With Me”. Deurloo’s harp is clear, swinging and relaxed breezing well on the relaxed “So Long, Redhead”, bluesy on the bopping “Doctor’s Wind” and slinky to the Gadd’s patented backbeat on “The Man With The Hat (On The Train)”. Hays boogaloos with her on “Zombie Chicken” and the team has fun on the swampfest of the title tune. Enjoyable entrees.
